3.3 Miller's law

Screenshot of Figma's shape insertion toolbar showing a dropdown menu with 7 options: Rectangle, Line, Arrow, Ellipse, Polygon, Star, and Image/video, with keyboard shortcuts listed alongside each.

Figma groups related tools into smaller menus, limiting cognitive load.

The Principle: The average person can only keep 7 (plus or minus 2) items in their working memory.

  • Chunking: Organize content into smaller chunks to help users process, understand, and memorize easily. (e.g., grouping phone numbers as 000-000-0000).
  • Limit Menu Items: Avoid navigation bars with more than 5-9 top-level links.
  • Reduce Clutter: Keep the interface clean so users don't have to process too much information simultaneously.
